Henry Bontempo

Springfield native was one of area’s legendary club professionals, opening Franconia GC in Springfield in 1929 and retiring in 1968; noted for his own and instruction of the short game; acclaimed teacher was known for relationships with great touring pros in 1930 and ’40s; defeated amateur great Bobby Jones for $1 in a friendly match at Longmeadow CC in 1941; won more than 100 individual and pro-am titles, including four Manchester (Conn.) Open crowns; turned pro at 18 and initially worked at Quaboag and Tekoa Country Clubs.
